- Energy contour – the imaginary surface around an equipment, installation, department, plant, business operator, to which relate the input and output energy flows.
- Electro-energy balance is the energy balance that aims to manage electric energy flows
- Thermal-energy balance is the energy balance that aims to manage thermal energy flows
Here are the norms related to drafting energy balances:
- Handbook to draft and analyze energy balance, published in the Official Gazette, Part I, no. 792 bis, of November 11th, 2003, comprising obligations, recommendations, fundamental principles and general methodology indications on how to draft energy balances for power consumers (fuel, heat and electric energy) and methods to estimate energy efficiency; A.R.C.E.
- Norm PE 902/86 (reedited in 1995) on how to draft and analyze energy balances, in compliance with the Catalogue of technical recommendations and prescriptions valid in the energy field, starting with 2002, recommended by A.N.R.E. (Romanian Energy Regulatory Authority)
The measuring and recording devices for the evaluated energy values are:

The balance evaluates the energetic status of each receptor (electric engine, electric furnaces, industrial devices, lighting devices), per distribution panel up to the overall electric power panel (end of energy supply contour). The real energy consumptions per receptor, user, installation and panel, department and the industrial consumer’s consumptions are added together.
Following these premises, an optimized balance of power consumptions is drafted, taking into consideration the consumption savings and subtraction of energy losses so that, a smaller quantity of energy would be used with the same quality of processes but at lower prices.
Based on the energy balance, that may be mandatory for certain users, an energetic efficiency program is established aiming to lower the energy rates.
